Cervical cancer is still rare in postmenopausal women, but more prevalent in midlife and older women. 

Occasionally, women may be called back for a repeat smear - not necessarily because there are any abnormalities, but because the smear is "unreadable".

The cervical smear test can be very effective in the prevention of cervical cancer.  All women between the ages of 25 and 64 are eligible for a free cervical screening test every three to five years.  For full information the latest update on NHS cervical screening please use the NHS links below.
