Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine, first proposed by German physician Samuel Hanemann in 1796 that treats patients with heavily diluted preparations which are thought to cause effects similar to the symptoms presented which help cure that illness.
Homeopathic remedies are prepared by serial dilution with shaking by forceful striking. Each dilution is said to increase the effect of the treatment. The number given after each homeopathic name indicates how diluted the remedy is eg Sepia 6 is less potent than the more diluted Sepia 30.
Homeopathy doesn't interfere with conventional medicine and should be seen as a complementary treatment, not as an alternative.
Apart from the symptoms of the ailment, homeopaths use aspects of the patient's physical and psychological state in recommending remedies. Homeopathic reference books known as repertories are then consulted, and a remedy is selected based on the totality of symptoms (aimed at treating the whole person rather than just the ailment).
Homeopathic remedies are considered safe, with rare exceptions and are derived from mineral, animal or vegetable matter. These remedies come in the form of tablets or pills.
Hot flushes - Lachesis
Hot lushes and night sweats - Belladonna
Insomnia - Pulsatilla
PMS - Bryonia
Dry vagina, prolapse - Sepia
Dry itchy vulva and skin - Sulphur
Although you can treat yourself, it is wise to consult a homeopathic practitioner for their expert advice. There are only four hospitals in the UK that have doctors qualified in homeopathy available on the NHS in the cities of Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool and London. However, there are also a number of NHS homeopathic clinics around the country and over 400 GPs use homeopathy in their everyday practice.
Details of these hospitals and registered practitioners can be found by visiting the British Homeopathic Association in Related links below by just entering your postcode. This site is full of information on all aspects of homepathy. Also visit other useful links below.
